About Ushuaia
Ushuaia is located on the shores of the Beagle Channel, with the Martial Mountains rising behind the city. Its dramatic setting, at the very edge of the South American continent, has earned it the nickname "El Fin del Mundo" (The End of the World). This remote location gives Ushuaia a frontier feel, despite its modern amenities and growing tourism infrastructure.
The city serves as the capital of Tierra del Fuego Province and is a major port for Antarctic expeditions. During the summer months (December-March), numerous cruise ships depart from Ushuaia to the Antarctic Peninsula, making it an important hub for polar tourism. The port also welcomes cruise ships traveling around Cape Horn and through the Strait of Magellan.
Ushuaia has a fascinating history, having served as a penal colony in the early 20th century. The Prison Museum (Museo Marítimo y del Presidio) offers insights into this period and the harsh conditions faced by prisoners who were sent to this remote location. The city's history also includes the indigenous Yámana people, European missionaries, and early explorers like Ferdinand Magellan and Charles Darwin.
Today, Ushuaia is a vibrant destination offering a wide range of outdoor activities, from hiking and wildlife watching in Tierra del Fuego National Park to skiing at Cerro Castor in winter. The city itself features museums, restaurants serving local specialties like king crab, and shops selling duty-free goods and souvenirs.
